Kabelo “Cabblow” Maaka is a 24-year-old animator, illustrator, animation lecturer and company director of the recently formed Cabblow Studios – a Johannesburg based animation studio focused on creating original animated stories, medical animation services and client commissioned illustrations.
Kabelo is passionate about animation and about sharing that passion with others. She has received a Bachelor of Arts Degree (Honours) in Animation and Scriptwriting from AFDA and has also attended the International Character Animation Summer School hosted by Gobelins L’École de L’Image
in Paris, France. Gobelins is a world-renowned film, photography and animation school. Here she strengthened her skills in character animation and was exposed to advanced animation training methods. In 2016 she completed an Animation Internship with the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF).
Unsatisfied with the quality of Animation education in South Africa, Kabelo started using YouTube to create art and animation tutorials and to share her experiences studying in France. In 2018 her YouTube videos helped her start her job as an Animation Lecturer at City Varsity: Braamfontein. She lectures classes in 2D Animation, Life drawing, Digital drawing & Pre-production Techniques. Kabelo also hosts a Film and Animation club at her old high school – St Mary’s School, Waverley and she mentors a young budding animator of 11 years old on the weekends.
Kabelo is skilled in digital character animation, character design, storyboarding, scriptwriting, illustration, film editing, research and singing.
She is a visionary with a warm and infectious personality. As a young South African she is full of life and excitement for the future of the local & international animation industry. Through her work she is focused on being a game-changer by cultivating a unique voice that contributes meaningfully to the animation conversation.
